VITA: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program
Since it was launched in 2010, the WIPPS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has helped hundreds of taxpayers in central and northern Wisconsin prepare their tax returns at no charge.
These individuals have low to moderate income ($54,000 or less). Many are able to take advantage of the Earned Income and Homestead Credits; two important anti-poverty programs. Our volunteer tax preparers also help with the Child Tax Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit and Education Credits.
VITA helps college students receive practical experience in tax preparation and customer service. UWMC Accounting Professor Ellen Kemnitz has coordinated the student/community volunteers along with Leo Moua, VITA program coordinator.
The WIPPS VITA program is always looking for additional volunteers. Our goal is to assist as many eligible taxpayers as possible with free tax return preparation. With additional volunteers, we can increase the number of hours and days our VITA site is open.
