The Shirlyn Miller Lecture in Human Rights and Public Understanding, with Aziz Abu Sarah and Magen Inon
Date:
Time: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Details:
Magen Inon is an Israeli educator and peace activist, now based in London, whose parents were killed on October 7, 2023. Aziz Abu Sarah is a Palestinian peace activist, social entrepreneur, and conflict resolution expert whose older brother was arrested for throwing stones, held in prison for nearly a year, and died due to internal injuries sustained while being tortured in prison. Together with their families, they have been leading a campaign against revenge and for peace.
In April 2024, Aziz and Magen’s brother Maoz recorded a TED Talk (“A Palestinian and an Israeli, Face to Face”) that became the platform’s third most watched video of the year. The next month, they shared the stage with Pope Francis in front of 13,000 people in Verona, Italy, for an event titled, “Arena of Peace – Justice and Peace Shall Embrace.” They helped organize a gathering in Tel Aviv called, “It’s Time: The Great Peace Conference,” filling an indoor coliseum on July 1. Maoz, Magen, and Aziz have spoken to political leaders and members of civil society throughout the Middle East, Europe, and North and South America, and now these peacemakers are coming to the Mauthe Center.
This event is free and open to the public with three ways to attend:

Magen and Aziz will be in conversation at the Mauthe Center as part of the Shirlyn Miller Lecture in Human Rights and Public Understanding. Through the generosity of her daughter Susan Nuetzel, this series honors the life and work of Shirlyn Miller, well known in the Green Bay community for her many contributions to human flourishing and public understanding.
Aziz Abu Sarah is the co-founder of MEJDI Tours, a National Geographic Explorer and a TED Fellow. He has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Al-Quds, Haaretz, National Geographic, CNN, TED, and Al Arabiya. He is the author of Crossing Boundaries – A Traveler’s Guide To World Peace, and co-author of Strangers, Neighbors, Friends: Muslim-Christian-Jewish Reflections on Compassion and Peace. Aziz has served as Executive Director at the Center for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University and as the Chairman for the Parents Circle Family Forum, representing the organization at international governmental organizations such as the European Parliament. He is the cofounder of InterAct International, a non profit advancing sustainability, education, and cross cultural connections.
Magen Inon is a London-based father of three, an educator with a PhD in the philosophy of education. He has worked to cultivate liberal values and leadership skills with students, military officers, young adults, and inmates. Since the murder of his parents in the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Magen has become a leading voice for peace between Israelis and Palestinians within international media, local communities, and the political elite. (See his compelling essay in The Guardian, “I lost my parents in the Hamas attack. My family want peace, not revenge for their deaths.”) Collaborating with Palestinian peace activists Hamze Awawde, Aziz Abu Sarah, Mira Awad and more, he focuses on universities and colleges to create hope and shared spaces for dialogue on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Mauthe Center is an independent nonprofit on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, that cultivates mutual respect, public understanding, and civic engagement among UW-Green Bay students and the broader community. Learn more at mcenter.org.
