Join us this weekend for World Refugee Day
The Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC), the American Hispanic Association, New Beginnings for Refugees, the Community Foundation of Northcentral Wisconsin, and the Hmong American Center, Inc. will be hosting an event on June 18th, 2022, to celebrate World Refugee Day.
World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to recognize refugees around the globe by celebrating the strength and courage of those who have been forcibly displaced by conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is also an occasion to build empathy and understanding.
The Hmong and Hispanic Communication Network (H2N) and AMI Expeditionary Healthcare (AMI) will be providing free COVID-19 vaccinations at the event.
“Participation in World Refugee Day is an opportunity to increase awareness of the backgrounds and contributions of refugees right here in Wausau and central Wisconsin—some who have been a part of our communities for decades and others who have only recently arrived,” says Adam VanNoord, the Director of ECDC’s resettlement agency. “As part of a multicultural collaboration, we hope to honor the strength and resilience of current and former refugees and provide a family-friendly event for all to enjoy.”
The Celebration will be held at the 400 Block in Downtown Wausau from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. There will be a variety of performances, food, and activities from the Hispanic, Afghan and Hmong communities.
