WIPPS 2015 Spring News: High Five 4 College scores big with middle schoolers

A program that helps at-risk students learn about college and develop leadership skills through interactive activities is earning rave reviews from Wausau’s Horace Mann Middle schoolers.

“High Five 4 College is a growth experience for the students,” said Leo Moua, WIPPS research assistant and High 5 coordinator.

Using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as this year’s theme, kids experienced interactive learning, field trips and guest speakers to learn about a variety of career paths.

Whether it was a field trip to the Engineering and Global Leadership Academy, creating YouTube videos via iPads, staging an Amazing Race or launching a Leadership Olympiad, students learned about a wide world of career choices.

“I learned new skills, know more about me and making new friends,” said Amelia. “I also know to be a leader and to take challenges and risks.”

“High Five helped me learn about being a leader,” said Kannitha. “It gave me courage about talking to others and making new friends.”
